Biography
Alexander Dumas

Alexander (Alex)  was born and brought up  with his three siblings, brother Micheal and sisters Christine and Emma in the small hamlet of Whitney.  Whitney is located on the eastern border of Algonquin Park.  During his childhood Alex explored the woods and wilderness that surrounded his rural home.  His keen interest in wildlife lead him to observe the animals and environment around him.  He first started his exploration into the recreation of animal subject when he started to taxidermy when he was a teenager.
After Alex finished high school he attended Humber College in Toronto Ontario and complete a course to become a Civil Engineer.  After working in Toronto for a number of years and getting married, Alex and his wife Jane return to Whitney. They moved back so that they could again lead a rural life and to start their family. Upon returning to Whitney Alex designed and built  the family home.
As the Dumas family expanded to first a son, Lucas, then four years later with a daughter, Amanda,  Alex stayed at home to take care of his children.  This gave him the opportunity to not only explore nature again  but also share his love of nature with his children.  During these years Alex started to carve Canadian wildlife. He started first only using wood, but soon started experimenting with other materials.  Painted steel for bird beaks and feet, polished stone for the bases, antler and bone for other parts and most recently he has been experimenting with the use of exotic woods that contribute striking colors to his carvings.
Alex talks of his inspiration, how it comes directly from observing the animals he carves.  He strives to capture the animals in their everyday life; to capture the natural motion of their being.  He wishes to show how nature is always moving and changing .
The collection of his material to create his carvings is also key. Inspiration for a carving may come from a rock found in a back field, a shed deer antler or a piece of un-split fire wood.

Since his start as a professional carver Alex has recreated hundred of nature's creatures. His carvings have been purchased throughout North America.
